In 1996 Rick and Pati visited their Outer Banks home and an idea was born. Coming from New Jersey, they had a passion for great bagels and deli-style sandwiches. Whenever they visited the OBX, all they could find were bagels that were too hard and dry or the frozen variety. So, with optimism that there was an eager customer base of likeminded former “northerners” and a yearly influx of NJ/NY/PA tourists…the search for a site began.

The anticipated call came in the Fall of 2000. The site in Corolla was approved after 50 gallons of water were driven north to test the quality of the bagels produced. Rick then entered “Bagel School” (actually on the job training!) in New York.  In February of 2001, Rick and Pati loaded a U-Haul truck and moved to the Outer Banks. Lighthouse Bagels opened for business Memorial Day weekend, Rick soon became known far & wide as the “Bagelman”, and the rest is history!

Today we are still serving the same high quality, kettled bagels, artisan donuts, and delicious lunches. Because of you, Lighthouse Bagels is more popular than ever!
In 2017, Pati and Rick retired from over 16 years of dedicated service to the shop.
They handed the reigns to their son, Ryan, (formerly) known as the “Bagel Prince.”
Ryan is extremely passionate about maintaining the quality of the products he wakes up so early to bake. He and his wife Sarah, are excited and honored to keep the family tradition alive and look forward to seeing you in the shop!

It’s no coincidence that we make the best bagels in Outer Banks. Every morning the Bagel Boys get up well before the crack of dawn to make real NY/NJ style bagels. We literally make the bagels from scratch, starting with flour and water, taking no short cuts on the way to deliciousness. Here is a little video we pulled together to show you the steps we take to make the bagels the right way.
